Sussex escape: The Alexander House Hotel

Just before Christmas we decided to make the most of our Southern rail delay replay vouchers, by treating ourselves to a night at the Alexander House Hotel in Sussex! I’m not sure this is how the vouchers are meant to be used, but we figured commuting had been super stressful so spa time was totally justified… Especially if it was courtesy of Southern rail!

The Alexander House Hotel was offering a room & use of the spa for £169, so we snapped it up figuring it was a nice way to kick off the Christmas festivities. We’d not been before, so also saw it as an opportunity to check out more of what Sussex has to offer by way of weekend breaks.

About 20 minutes from Brighton, an hour from London, in the heart of the Sussex countryside, the hotel is set in stunning grounds – making it feel like a real country escape. We arrived for our 3pm check in time, so that we could make the most of the spa (I literally love a spa). The staff were very welcoming, and the hotel felt very Christmassy with its many Christmas trees and roaring log fire. Our room was on the top floor, so out of the way and nice and quiet; perfect for our relaxing break.

We wasted no time in hitting up the spa. It has a good pool, and indoor jacuzzi, as well as a sauna & steam room in both sets of changing rooms. There were also no children – I’ve got nothing against them unless they come between me and my spa time 😉.

The spa is very nice, and the highlight is most definitely the outdoor hot tub! There is something pretty spectacular about sitting in an outside hot tub, at twilight, surrounded by the hotel’s beautiful garden.

I also treated myself to a massage, which was probably one of the best I’ve had – so I would definitely recommend booking a treatment if you go.

We eventually dragged ourselves away to get ready for dinner, firstly enjoying a bottle of champagne we’d brought with us – the hotel was super accommodating in delivering an ice bucket, glasses and bar snacks to our room (I don’t think it gets better than lounging in your spa robe drinking champagne…if only we could do that every day!).

The hotel has two restaurants: AG’s, a more formal 3 AA Rosette restaurant; and Reflections, a more relaxed 2 AA Rosette restaurant. Having gone crazy with Christmas shopping, our budget could only stretch to Reflections, but that was perfect for us as we tend to prefer a more relaxed dining environment.

We were not disappointed, the food was delicious! Amazing freshly baked bread, all done on site, and outstanding mains – I opted for fish, mashed potato, mushrooms & kale, and my husband went for braised lamb shank, sweet potato mash, cannellini beans & lardons. Both meals were exceptional.

We also treated ourselves to a dessert of warm chocolate and hazelnut pudding, with chocolate sauce & hazelnut ice cream which was also nice, but not on the same level as the mains; however on mentioning this to our waitress (I like to be honest when asked “how was everything?”) they swiftly removed it from the final bill which I thought was a really lovely touch. Excellent service all round.

We retired for a night cap in the Champagne Bar, which had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and another awesome Christmas tree (I love these almost as much as I love spas).

On waking the next morning, thankful for opting for the room only rate, as there was no way we could eat breakfast since we were still full from the night before, we [of course] fitted in another spa session before checking out.

We had a great break at the Alexander House Hotel – it was very relaxing & one I would recommend for a night away in Sussex. We’ll be back.
